I would like to take time to clarify some words that may have come out wrong or been misunderstood in the past.
Let me begin by saying that I have a passion for the safety of children and vulnerable people in our community. It has been a passion for my entire lifetime. It is the reason that I decided to run for Mayor.
I have made statements that the mayor and the Port St. Lucie Police need to "do better". I stand by that statement, but not in disrespect of them. I have a great deal of respect for the police. I have worked with multiple agencies my entire life when I was in the emergecny services field. My statements are not directed at the police as individuals. These brave men and women put their lives on the line everyday and I could not be more grateful for their services.
The statement "do better" is intended to be "make changes". Our community is not served in a way that we should be or a way that people want / need it to be. This city police department has had over 80 reports of missing children & vulnerable adults since January 2025 (less than a year from this writing). The only notification I see when this has happened was a Facebook post that has been hours, even days old. The police can only do so much when someone is missing. There are only so many resources available for every situation, but we are not utilizing the resources we have beyond personnel. A phone alert sent out to ALL the community when someone is missing could make the difference and save a life. People respond to phone alerts, they scroll through Facebook posts that do not pertain to them. Nobody sees a Facebook post about a missing person and gets off the couch to look for them. FACEBOOK IS NOT AN EMERGENCY ALERT SYSTEM AND A MISSING PERSON IS AN EMERGENCY!
So, for clarity. I commend the men and women who go out to help those in need, but I also want the people behind the scenes thinking outside the box to do more. Send a text or phone alert and employ the people of the community to help in certain situations. We get an alert for a kidnapping in counties nowhere near us, there is no reason to refrain from getting an alert to someone in danger in our own community, even if they are not kidnapped.
For those of you who may need to report a missing person (no matter the age), DO NOT WAIT! There is not a "wait period" to file a report, especially for a small child. Call immediately. Provide as much information as possible and ask the law enforcement officer to send an alert to the area so people are made immediately aware and can help. Let's all do our part to bring our children and family members home.
